DAPITAN CITY—A female archer from Central Visayas hit four gold medals while Western Visayas continued its dominance on the track on Wednesday in the 2011 Palarong Pambansa here.
Marie Crizabelle Merto, an incoming senior at Silliman University, a school with a rich archery tradition, became the first four-gold winner of the event after ruling the 30-meter, 40-meter, 50-meter and single Fita events of the archery competition at the Zamboanga Norte Sports Complex Archery Range.
The 16-year-old Merto matched her performance in last year’s Palaro in Tarlac City and became the first multiple-gold winner for Central Visayas in this year’s event organized by the Department of Education.
She barely missed a fifth gold as she yielded to Febenlyn Encabo in the 60-meter event, 298-300. She will try to surpass her 2010 haul as she competes in the Olympic and team events on Thursday.
Western Visayas added six golds to its haul early in the morning, while the National Capital Region (NCR) dominated the table-tennis and rhythmic gymnastics events as the two powerhouse regions again look to turn the national event into a two-way fight for the overall championship.
Rofey Gilva, Rhea Castellano, Rieveneth Jayed Penarubia, Jasmin Tayco, Maika de Oro and Richee Joy Cabanyog produced gold medals for Western Visayas after ruling their respective events in athletics.
Gilva clocked one minute and 1.64 seconds to win the elementary boys’ 400-meter hurdles against Calabarzon’s Aldrin Valenzuela (1:01.99) and the NCR’s Arman Reinier Mahigab (1.04.80). Castellano edged NCR bet Paula Mae Bardaje in the elementary girls’ event.
The 400-meter hurdles secondary girls’ title also went to Western Visayas as Penarubia submitted a time of one minute and 5.73 seconds to beat compatriot Daisyry Juanillo.
Local bet Aldrin Gonzales prevented the Western Visayas sweep in the hurdles, winning the 400-meter high-school boys’ title in 55.73 seconds, beating WV’s Gerard Glen Gonzales WV (56.89).
Tayco won the elementary girls’ long jump with a 4.79-meter leap against another Western Visayas entry, Kimberly Natan (4.67). De Oro, meanwhile, ruled the high-school girls’ shot put with a 10.5-meter throw.
Cabanyog won the discus throw in secondary boys with a 33.52-meter heave.
While Western Visayas had another impressive showing at the oval track, the NCR dominated the indoor events.
The Big City bets ruled the team event in badminton behind Ethan Joshua Malelang, Roberto Pineda, Carlo Glenn Remo and Gerald Sibayan in the secondary boys; and Marina Caculitan, Diane Felderica Castro, Cassandra Grace Lim and Patrisha Edrika Malibiran in high-school division.
The NCR also took the gold in the elementary division with the quartet of Mark Shelly Alcala, Reyster Ryan Barron, Keeyan Freil Gabuelo and Boris Patrick Sumabat winning the boys’ category, while their counterparts Sharah Joy Barredo, Aldreen Rae Concepcion, Pauline Joyce Santos and Mikaela Francine Vargas winning the gold in the elementary girls.
The rhythmic gymnastics was also dominated by the NCR bets, with its elementary girls’ team winning the gold convincingly with 158.09 points. Central Visayas was second (114.48), followed by Ilocos region (101.36).
NCR bets Ariell Nicole Orella, Jelligyn Gerandoy and Jhazelle Limenson finished 1-2-3 in the individual rhythmic event for elementary girls.
The NCR just scooped seven gold medals in Day One of swimming competition behind Mark Joseph Romingkit, who had three in that haul on Tuesday.
