THE biggest archery tournament so far in the country—the 1st Cebu Archery Open Tournament has attracted its youngest competitor in seven-year-old Crisha Mae “Mizi” Merto.

Mizi is the younger sister of Marie Crizabelle Merto, who gave Central Visayas its four gold medals in the recently-held 53rd Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac.

Both girls are the daughters of Crizaldo Merto, who was once a member of the RP Archery Team. The Mertos are from Dumaguete City.

Mizi not only draws attention for usually being the youngest in the tournament but also for her dainty form. She already has six titles to her credit, including one which she won in a national competition in Manila last year.

She will be competing in the olympic round of the same category today after topping yesterday's qualification's at the Aboitiz field at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.

“I just pretend that I am training in the shooting range,” Mizi said when asked how she focuses on her game and avoid getting distracted from her target.

Mizi, who stands barely a few inches than her bow, said she hopes to also compete in the Palarong Pambansa.

Mizi will be joined by about 75 archers from all over the country including members of the RP Team in the tournament, which will serve as a ranking/qualifying tournament for the 16th Asian Games which will be held in Guangzhou, China in November, said former RP Team captain Kit Cojuangco. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G.
